AUTAVIA, or AUTomobile and AVIAtion, a name that says it all. The history of this legendary chronograph dates back to the 1930s (1933), when the first Autavia, as a timekeeper, served to quickly navigate pilots and motorists on the dashboards of their powerful machines.
Later in the 1960s, Jack Heuer borrowed the name Autavia for his first chronograph with a rotating bezel, which had the same goal: to provide motorists with quick and clear time information. Its entire appearance was subject to this goal—striking black and white colors, a clear division between the numerals and chronograph indicators, and an emphasis on functionality and purity of design. It all worked perfectly, making the model popular with many motorists and racers, including F1 stars Mario Andretti, Jo Siffert, and Clay Regazzoni, who ran on kerosene, tobacco, and adrenaline and lived a life where hundredths of a second often made the difference.
Now, after 55 years, Autavia is returning to the TAG Heuer collection in the form of an automatic chronograph. It has been improved with modern technology that is in line with the original philosophy. The neo-retro design does not deny its origins in the 1960s, the golden age of motor racing.
Many experts and amateurs from the general public contributed to its final form. Through the interactive web project "Autavia Cup," which took place last year on the TAG Heuer website, more than 50,000 registered users were able to choose from 16 original versions of the Autavia model the one they liked best and which will enjoy a reissue.
The winner was model 2446 Mark 3, known as Autavia "Rindt," worn by the famous F1 driver Jochen Rindt. It is a robust model with a black rotating bezel and three white dials, which stands out for its perfect readability and clarity. The case has a diameter of 42 mm, is water-resistant to 100 meters, and is equipped with an internal Calibre H02 automatic chronograph. This TAG Heuer operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, has a remarkable 80-hour power reserve, and consists of 233 components that can be seen in action thanks to the sapphire crystal case back.
