The Watches and Wonders exhibition was not always the watchmaking giant we know today. It began under the name Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in 1991 as an exclusive alternative to Baselworld. SIHH, which originally hosted only 17 brands under the auspices of the Richemont Group, established itself as a luxury alternative to the more commercially oriented Baselworld.
The transformation to Watches and Wonders in 2020 marked a fundamental evolution in the scope and philosophy of the exhibition. This rebranding coincided with significant changes in the industry, including the departure of major brands from Baselworld and an increased focus on direct consumer contact. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transformation, forcing the event to introduce digital formats in 2020 and 2021, which have since become integral elements of the exhibition strategy. This hybrid approach has democratized access while preserving the exclusivity that defines the participating maisons.
By 2023, Watches and Wonders had fully consolidated its position as the industry's leading event, absorbing many former Baselworld exhibitors and expanding its Geneva footprint at Palexpo to more than 60 exhibitors and 50,000 square meters.
